He is survived by two sons, Robert of Northfield and Benjamin of Warren, Mich; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. Funeral services and burial will be at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are being made by the Wimberg Funeral Home, 400 Liverpool Ave., Egg Harbor City.

He had also been a professional soccer player, playing for the Forfar Athletics team in Scotland, on a championship team in Canada, and on teams in Boston, New York, Providence, New Bedford and Fall River. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Needham and the Needham Retired Men's Club Choir. He was also a member of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America. Mr. Burness was a member and past chief of Clan McLoud, Order of the Scottish Clans, Number 101 in Hyde Park. He leaves his wife, Florence B. (Aitchison) Burness; three sons, John Gordon Jr. of Millington, Tenn., Robert James of Puyallup, Wash., and Peter William of Hampton, N.H; two daughters, Greta Jean Glorioso of Natick and Susan Margaret Congdon of Needham; 18 grandchildren and 16 great- grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Christ Episcopal Church, Needham.5
