Obituary: Frances Gertrude Caswell died at Logan County hospital on Oct 24, 1971, at the age of 84 years and 2 days. She was born to Violet and Albert Hall Oct 22, 1887, on a farm near Chanute, Kans. Her mother was an early pioneer teacher. At the age of 6 months she moved with her pioneer parents, in a covered wagon to a homestead at the foot of the Lone Butte near Russell Springs, Kans. In 1897 when Frances was 10 years old the family moved to a farm 4 miles west of Oakley. She received her education in the Oakley community and graduated from Oakley High School in 1904. She earned a teaching certificate and taught at the Duttlinger school south of Monument, at the Vawter school north of Oakley and several terms in the Oakley school system. She was always interested in better education and worked diligently for the formation of the Oakley consolidated school system. In 1910 she was united in marriage to William A. (Billy) Caswell and established a home on a farm 6 miles west of Oakley. Three years later they moved to South Dakota where they farmed for 5 years. In 1918 they returned to the farm that first belonged to her parents, 4 miles west of Oakley where Frances had spent her youth and continued to live there until moving to Oakley in 1969. Mrs. Caswell never wanted anything for herself, only for her children. At a time when many people left Western Kansas during the dust-bowl days, when members of her family would have left also, it was she who sat tight, refusing to leave, believing the land would come back, which it did. For the past year the Caswells resided at Parkside Manor nursing home. Mrs. Caswell is survived by her husband; a sister, Mrs. Ruth Gridley, Oakley; 2 sons, Ernest and Ed, both of Bartlesville, Okla., 5 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren. A daughter, Nellie, preceded her in death in March of 1969. She became a Christian at the age of 12 when she was baptized into Christ on Jan. 8, 1900. Mr. Hiram Caswell, pastor of the Christian Church, Oakley, officiated at funeral services Oct 26, at 2 p.m. at the Christian Church. Burial was in the Oakley Cemetery. Hall-Koster Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. (OBITUARY Oakley Graphic October 28, 1971 FRANCES CASWELL.)2
