Obituary: A memorial service was held yesterday for Thomas Burness King, a leading authority on the chemistry of steelmaking and a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Mr. King died after suffering a heart attack at his Winchester home on Saturday. He was 62. The service was held in the First Congregational Church on the Common in Winchester. A date for a memorial service at MIT will be announced. He was born in Motherwell, Scotland. He received a bachelor of science degree in applied chemistry with honors in 1945, graduating with honors, and his doctorate in metallurgy in 1950 from Glasgow University in Scotland. Mr. King was recognized internationally for his work in chemical metallurgy and chemical kinetics. He joined the staff at MIT in 1953 after fours years as a lecturer at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland. Before joining the faculty at the University of Strathclyde, he was a metallurgist for the Clyde Alloy Steel Co. in Glasgow. He became an assistant professor in 1957 and a professor in 1961. From 1962 until 1972 he was head of MIT's Department of Metallurgy and Materials Science, which is now called the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. He was respected for his leadership in a time of important transitions in the Department and the institute. Mr. King taught for nearly 33 years at MIT, and was director of the departmental co-op program, in which students acquire working experience in industry, since its inception. His research centered on thermodynamics and kinetics of high-temperature systems, such as in steelmaking. He wrote more than 50 technical papers on metallurgy and contributed chapters to several books. Mr. King was a leader in contacting Soviet scientists in his field, and on five occasions visited Soviet industrial facilities and technical institutes. In 1968, he was one of eight leading professors at MIT selected to give lectures in a series called "Horizon," which was devoted to aspects of science expected to have the greatest influence in the future. In 1985, Mr. King was awarded an honorary degree from Glasgow University. He was a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a member of the American Society for Metals. He was also a member of Sigma Xi and an honorary member of Alpha Sigma Mu. Mr. King leaves his wife, Helen Z. (Scott); three daughters, Lesley King of Boston, Edith King of Winchester, and Anne King of New York City; and a son, Alan King of New York City.
