A Mass of Christian Burial for John Walter Burness, 87, of Clinton will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Carl Janocha officiating.
A wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Stanley-Lee Funeral Home in Clinton.
Burness died early Friday, Oct. 22, 2004, at the Clinton Veterans Center. He was born on Dec. 22, 1916 at Hutson, Mass., the son of Robert and Eva (Day) Burness.
Growing up in Massachusetts, he attended a one-room school at New Braint, Mass.
In 1943 he joined the Air Force and served several overseas tours and was stationed at Spokane, Wash.
While in Spokane, he worked in a tire shop.
After his honorable discharge he moved to Oregon and worked in a lumberyard. Later, he moved to California where he became a trucker. He transferred to Oklahoma in 1971 and settled in Clinton in 1978.
On Feb. 14, 1988 he married Marion Bidwell in Foss, and they made their home in Clinton.
In addition to being a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church he was a member of the Hobbs-Ogle-Power American Legion Post No. 41 which he served as chaplain for two years.
He also was a member of VFW Post No. 6143 in Weatherford and the Knights of Columbus.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife and a sister, Julia Ann St. Peters.
Burial will conclude in the Clinton Cemetery.
Survivors include three stepdaughters, August Bidwell, Brenda Bidwell, Janie Bidwell, all of Vermont; three stepsons, Forrest Bidwell of Iowa, Stanley Bidwell of Foss, Seymour Bidwell of Vermont; an adopted sister, Beverly Shoptease of Clinton; and several step grandchildren and great grandchildren.
