He graduated from Michigan State University's College of Veterinary Medicine. After a successful career, devoted in part to the New Haven Animal Shelter, he moved to Delray Beach, Fla., in 1981, where after a short retirement, he began a second career as a middle school science teacher. He is survived by two sons, Richard Burness and his wife Karen, and Michael Burness; a daughter, Barbara Cianciosi and her husband Robert; and four granddaughters. He was predeceased by a sister, Eugenie (Burness) Schoolnik. Memorial contributions may be made to Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine, 4700 South Hagadorn Road, Suite 220, East Lansing, MI 48823-5399, or to a local animal shelter. Weinstein Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
