Obituary: Wallea Burness Draper, 92, a retired real estate broker who lived in Pacific Grove since 1960, passed away at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital from an aortic aneurism. She was born on Christmas Day in San Francisco to Wallace Starr Schlesinger and Mary Elizabeth Hawthorne, both native Californians. Her father died of pneumonia the same day she was born, so she was called Wallea by request of her grandmother to honor her father. Her birth certificate is Noel Stella Schlesinger. After graduating from Lowell High School in San Francisco in 1929, she went to the University of California at Berkeley. She did runway modeling at Ransohofrs and I. Magnin's while in college. When her mother was killed in an automobile accident on Thanksgiving Day in 1932, she helped her stepfather with his dental practice. After marrying Thomas Binney Burness, they moved to Oakland where they started a family. During World War II, she worked in the Richmond Shipyard for two years and then went into real estate in 1944 as a single mother of three sons. She married Petrus Ernest Draper in 1950 and had a daughter and son. She became a real estate broker in 1958 and began Draper Realty, which she brought with her to the Monterey Peninsula in the sixties when she moved to Pacific Grove. She was thought to be the oldest female real estate broker in the state. After raising two families, Wallea began writing and painting in her 70s and enjoyed traveling in her 80s. She will be remembered for her beautiful smile, her generosity, and her love of life. She is survived by her younger sister, Marjorie Petersen of Los Altos, and her children, Tad Burness (Sandy) of Pacific Grove, Tom Burness (Charlotte) of Auburn, Nina Taylor (Jim) of Prunedale, and Peter Draper (Wanda) of Carmel. She was preceded in death by her elder sister, May Martinus of Lockwood and her son Roger Brian Burness who was bitten by a tse tse fly. Mrs. Draper has ten grandchildren and seven great grand children. Wallea was a member of the Catholic Daughters of Saint Angela's Court and requests donations in her memory be made to them at P.O. Box 505, Pacific Grove Ca 93950. Viewing will be at the Paul's Mortuary on Monday, March 7, from 2:004:00 pm, followed by a rosary vigil at 7:00 pm in Saint Angela's Catholic Church. Her funeral mass will be Tuesday, March 8 at 10:00, at St. Angela's, followed by her burial at Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma.3
